Why do we wait until midnight, January 1st to bring in the New Year? It's just an arbitrary date we've all agreed upon. Why not some other date, or some other time? Why not now? Have you ever set a resolution before the New Year? Have you ever set one weeks, or months after?
Each New Year, my meditation teacher offers an inspirational message and I'm excited about hearing this year's message. But I'm also acutely aware of the underlying message behind many of her talks: Every moment is a new moment. Every moment is a glorious opportunity to start over again, to transform your life, to change your outlook?another golden chance to become everything you've always wanted to be.
Yet, if every moment is a new moment, why don't we all act on this simple truth?
I think I know the answer?it's hard. I can't tell you how often I've been fuming about something, and my wife pointed out that in this moment, I have a choice to change the way I feel. But do I listen? Actually, sometimes I do, but other times I resist. It's so much easier to be a victim?to allow my thoughts and emotions to dictate my response to life's events. How do you break free from this cycle?
Each day, starting with today, set the intention to recognize the power present in this moment. Spend a little time observing your thoughts, feelings and emotions. Then you'll begin to recognize when you're allowing them to dictate your experience. Only through diligent practice will you be capable of changing your approach in the present moment. Trust me, when times are good, this practice is easy. When a crisis occurs, you can only hope you've practiced enough to face it the way you'd like.
Remember, the New Year is a symbol of a new beginning?an opportunity that exists in every moment to recognize the greatness of who you are in this world, and choose directions for what you want to become. So set your resolutions high, not just for the New Year, but in every moment.
May you experience the power present within you, and in every moment of this New Year! Until next time, may all be well.
